THAILAND - SEPTEMBER 2007: While the world watches the violent crackdown on urban protesters, Burma's rural minority groups are being quietly wiped out on the remote eastern border. The Junta's silent secret weapon: malaria.
During the last ten years Human Right's Watch and the Karen Right's Group have collected evidence of genocide in eastern Burma as the military regime have attacked and destroyed at least three thousand villages, forcing people to flee and leaving half a million homeless. Bullets, landmines and fire do the most visible damage, but that's not what has been killing the Karen people in large numbers in the unforgiving jungles of eastern Burma malaria is taking a deadly toll.
